Write With Me #3 – character building

by Eva, in category How to be the Heroine of Your Own Story, The Writer's Life

I hope you take up your pen and write along with me, even if you only have 15 minutes! This week I started out by creating a Heroine Frame for the main character from last week’s Write With Me. A Heroine Frame is a one-page character building method I teach in How to Be the… Read More

The Fool’s Journey (Part 2)

by Eva, in category How to be the Heroine of Your Own Story, Plotting

As promised, hereย isย the 2nd and final part of my exploration of The Fool’s Journey and how the archetypal and mythical elements, and the universal imagery ofย the Major Arcana of the Tarot can be helpful for writers in developing character, world and story. Please read Part 1 first. If you feelย the need to takeย notes, might I… Read More

The Fool’s Journey (Part 1)

The Fool's Journey for Writers

What is the Fool’s Journey? The ‘Fool’s Journey’ is the termย coinedย by Eden Gray to describe the story of the Major Arcana of the Tarot. Unfortunately, Gray’s own accountย of the journey is merely a rushed appendix toย A Complete Guide to the Tarot, and in the absence of an “authoritative” version (if it isn’t a fool’s journey… Read More

Creative Writer Worksheets: Personal Archetypes

by Eva, in category How to be the Heroine of Your Own Story, Writing Worksheets

Creative Writer Worksheet – Personal Archetypes (PDF) Perhaps it’s my tendency to categorisation, but I often noticeย that the people I meet fall into patterns, and as I accumulate experiences, I fall into patterns of responsesย towards them.ย I admit that there is a danger with categorising people that you’ll do them an injustice, and not get to… Read More

The Night-Sea Journey & How to Use it in Your Story

by Eva, in category How to be the Heroine of Your Own Story, Mythology

PIN TO READ LATER Have you ever stood at the edge of an unlit sea at night, and looked out into its blackness? Whether you were in a busy restaurant or walking alone on the sands or even floating on top of the water, I’m sure you contemplated that space where the sea-sky was and… Read More

Thank you for your interest in ๐•ญ๐–‘๐–†๐–ˆ๐– ๐•ฒ๐–—๐–†๐–’๐–’๐–†๐–— โ€” itโ€™s been so motivating!
I stole the idea for the opening of my novel from Marie Corelliโ€™s ๐˜ˆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฉ. It all begins with an avalancheโ€ฆ
Rather apt, especially when I remember that I thought ๐•ญ๐–‘๐–†๐–ˆ๐– ๐•ฒ๐–—๐–†๐–’๐–’๐–†๐–— would grow into no more than a short story.
Iโ€™m now past the 50K mark. I think I have another 18-20K to type up, and Iโ€™m aiming for a final MS of 90-100K.
Iโ€™ve posted the first few paragraphs in my story highlight, if youโ€™d like to read it.

I love the look and feel of paper. When we were emptying out my parentsโ€™ offices, nothing delighted me more than finding forgotten piles of yellowed copy paper and notepads. I hoard wrinkled tissue paper, and brown paper packaging, and calendar pages. And now, to top it off, Iโ€™ve discovered those tiny little vellum booklets on Aliexpress. Help! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

"Writing has never been work to me, even when it c "Writing has never been work to me, even when it comes out badly, I like the action, the sound of the typer, a way to go. And even when I write badly and it comes back, I look at it and I don't mind too much: I've got a chance to improve. There's the matter of staying with it, tapping away, it seems to keep mending together; the mistakes and the good luck until it sounds and reads and feels better. Not that it's important or not important. Just tap tap tap. Of course, in the typing it's good if something comes along that is interesting to say, and such things don't arrive every day. You've got to wait a couple of days sometimes. And you've got to know that the big boys who have been doing it for centuries really haven't done it too well, even though you have copied from them, couldn't have started at any beginning without them, there's still nothing to owe. So, tap tap tap..." - Charles Bukowski to John Martin (January 3, 1982)
I bought this book for a writer friend, but couldn't resist flipping through it myself. It's a collection of letters that Bukowski sent out over the years, mostly in response to submissions & rejections & (heaven help the recipient) requests for bios to accompany his publications.
I don't know that it will teach you much about writing, but it's definitely a fun insight if you like Bukowski.
๐Ÿ“š Do you have any writing books you'd recommend?
