Creative Writer Worksheet – What to Read When Writing (PDF)

I mentioned that one of the best ways to grow as a writer is to imitate your favourite authors. Well, this worksheet is to help you figure out whose influence to draw on for various literary elements. For example, if I wanted to write a story about angels (which I do), I would certainly read Milton first, to remind myself of the language he used to describe them.

Reading is a great way to “prime” and prepare yourself to write, but if you do a lot of reading, sometimes you can forget how much you admire a particular characteristic in a writer, or why you admire it. Use this worksheet to create your “writer rolodex”.

P.S. Don’t forget your favourite poets too!
