Do you know a character who simply doesn’t work?
Maybe they’re unrealistic, flat, unlikeable, unmotivated, inconsistent, annoying, or just plain boring?
Have you tried fixing them?
Have you… failed?
If you have, chances are you were concentrating on changing characteristics, when characteristics are only a small, superficial part of the picture of WHO WE ARE.
Think about yourself…
Is that enough to define you?
Even if you listed a hundred characteristics, would it be enough to generate in the mind of someone else, the beautiful, unique, seeing, smelling, touching, breathing, hearing, tasting creature that is YOU?
Agonisingly long character profile sheets would argue, yes.
But I think something essential is missing.
Right below the surface of that single characteristic – “creative” – floats an intricate web of reasons, motivations, memories, people, places, experiences, excuses, circumstances, and feelings… all tightly interlocked with other aspects of your being.
Right below the surface is the story. The story of WHY you’re creative.
And it isn’t the “creative” characteristic that is defining you, but the STORY you tell about being “creative”.
You are the STORY you keep telling about who you are.
The STORY you keep telling yourself. The story you keep telling others.
Change your STORY, and you can change everything.
Change your STORY, and you can stop trying to “fix” things at a superficial level.
Change your STORY, and you can become the heroine you long to be.
